I use Firefox and I have AdBlock Plus. For a while, it was catching the ads here at DA, and it hadn't really occurred to me that it was- you don't notice when ads DON'T show up, after all. Within the past couple of weeks, DA added some code to put a glaring orange banner on the bottom third of every page asking people with adblockers to add an exception. I saw it and said, "yeah, I really should add an exception- the ads on DA aren't intrusive or anything." So I did, and the ad banners were displaying, and it wasn't a problem at all.

Until today.

I just logged on and went to my notifications. The very first deviation I clicked redirected to a malicious site that tried to download a "Firefox update" .js file. There was no clicking, the "download file" dialog popped up on its own. (And I had opened the deviation in a new tab in the background, so it was jarring to say the least.)

And then, I remembered why I have ABP in the first place. It's not because of banner ads- these hardly get in the way, after all, and my computer has no shortage of resources to display them. No, it's because too many ad servers use malicious code that redirects users away from the page they were trying to view, often to sites that try to put a virus on their computer, like the one DA sent me to today.

I understand that DA needs ad revenue, but I'm letting you put viruses on my computer to get it.
